Gorilla trekking in Uganda is an unforgettable adventure, and the journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one that stays with you long after you leave. Located in the southwestern corner of the country, this lush, dense park spans 331 square kilometers and is home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas. The park houses 18 gorilla families spread across four regions, each offering a unique trekking experience.
We stayed in Buhoma Village, conveniently located near the park’s headquarters. Buhoma Lodge, where we were hosted, provided cozy cottages with stunning views and even a post-trek massage to soothe our tired muscles. The village, nestled within the forest, has a local orphanage that welcomes visitors to enjoy a performance by the children and purchase handmade crafts—a great way to support the community.
The trek itself requires a moderate to high level of fitness, as you’re venturing into steep, challenging terrain. Before embarking, you must secure your permit and accommodation well in advance. On the day of the trek, you’ll receive a briefing about the gorilla family you’ll be visiting. In our case, after a 45-minute drive around the mountain, we began a steep ascent up to the ridge. As we climbed, our porter, a local community member, shared insights about the surrounding tea plantations and the path ahead. His help proved invaluable as we descended into the valley below.
Once at the base, our two guides led the way through the thick forest, using machetes to clear the path. The reward? A close-up encounter with the Habinyanja Gorilla family, including a majestic Silverback and playful juveniles. We spent an unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat, keeping a respectful distance but feeling the power and presence of these incredible creatures.
After the hour passed, we made the trek back, with our porters offering assistance through the steep terrain. We paused for lunch with a view of the tea plantations, savoring the moment. As we descended further, rain soaked us, but none of us minded—we were elated after such a life-changing experience.
Back at the headquarters, we received our Gorilla Tracking Certificates as a memento of this extraordinary adventure. Uganda’s gorilla trekking is not only about the trek itself but also about connecting with nature and local communities. I highly recommend this experience, as well as the chance to see chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Uganda is a must-visit destination for any nature lover or wildlife enthusiast.
